Basic Navigation

Navigation

In a virtual space you move around with your own avatar. Because learning or training materials are spread around the room and sound/conversations naturally decrease in volume as you move away, it is important that you can move around well. In imedu you can walk around, look around, teleport, and even fly. In this article you can refresh your memory and learn some extra tips

  • Walk with the keys W, A, S, D on the keyboard. You can also use the arrow keys.
  • Hold down the left mouse button and move the mouse to look around. Or use the Q and E keys to rotate left and right.
  • Press and hold the SHIFT key to run.
  • Turn flight mode on and off with the G key. To fly, look up and 'walk' forward (for students must be activated in the room settings).
  • Use the right mouse button to choose a location to teleport to
  • Use the CTRL + single quote (`) - or just the single quote key, depending on your keyboard settings - to hide all buttons and panels. Use again or press ESC to show again.

Menu

  • The audio settings let's you select your audio device and unmute or mute your microphone.
  • The tools menu provides several tools to use in the space like a pen, virtual camera, screenshare or web-cam feed.
  • The place menu let's you add content to the space such as images, videos, PDF's or 3D models.
  • The react menu let's you send emoji's to other people in the space.
  • With the chat function you can communicate with everybody in the virtual location.

* Note that some some settings (such as flying or menu options) may have been disabled by the organizer.

Adjusting walking speed

Besides 'running' you can also adjust your basic walking speed. To do this, open the menu with the button 'More' in the lower right corner of the screen.

  • Click on "Preferences
  • Under 'Controls', you can increase or decrease your speed under 'Movement speed modifier'.

Setting sound

When you enter a room on imedu world for the first time, your browser will ask for access to your microphone. This looks slightly different in each browser but is usually a notification at the top of the screen. It is important that you allow this so that you can talk to others.

In addition, you will see a screen where you can choose your microphone and speakers. If you're working with a headset, it's important to select it from the list. Talk into your microphone to test, and click on the speaker to play a test sound.

In space, you can mute and unmute your microphone with the 'Voice' button, at the bottom of the screen.

Working without a mouse

Without a mouse, it is often more difficult to look around. For this, the 'Look' mode is useful, especially when working with a trackpad.

  • Press the L button to switch between 'look around' and 'point'. When enabled, your mouse pointer is turned off and your trackpad (or mouse) works to look around.
  • Press L again to reactivate the mouse pointer and click a button, for example.

Move to a fixed spot

Some rooms have fixed places where you can sit or stand. The advantage is that you then automatically have a good spot and viewing direction for a screen or stage, for example.

  • Hold down the space bar and look around the room, you will see all available fixed spots appear as 'white icons'.
  • Just click on a spot to teleport to it.
