How to choose your avatar, settings and other tips

Are you looking to change your avatar or the name displayed above your virtual avatar, then this article is for you! Besides avatar settings, we will also discuss how you can change some personal settings such as audio, microphone, and navigation settings. In the end, we also have a little instruction for using the camera tool.

How to Change your name and avatar

When you first entered the space you may have already chosen an avatar, otherwise, you can change it at any time from the menu.

  • Click on 'More' at the bottom of the bar
  • Go to 'Change name & avatar
  • Change your name in the text field above the avatar. By default, this is a fantasy name
  • Click on 'Change avatar' to choose another avatar.

You now have three options:

  • Choose a default avatar from the list. Please note that there are several pages
  • Or click 'Create Ready Player Me avatar' to create your own personal avatar
  • Upload your own avatar file (.glb)

For the creation of a personal avatar an integration has been made with ReadyPlayerMe. This app allows you to quickly create an avatar that looks like you via a selfie (or manually). Simply follow the steps to create your avatar.

After you make your choice, don't forget to click 'Accept' to save your changes ! Anytime you want to see with which Avatar you joined a room click on the i button on your keyboard to see yourself.

How to change personal settings

Through the menu you can change your personal settings for audio, controls and display of the room.

  • Open the menu via "More
  • Click on "Preferences
  • You now have 3 panels
    • Audio: here you can change your sound settings. Only adjust this if you experience problems with the sound. If for example your microphone is not working you can change it via the option 'Preferred mic'.
    • Controls: set the speed at which you move. You can also adjust the settings for the touchscreen here.
    • Misc: here you can find a number of other settings such as language, displaying name tags and which webcam imedu should use. Also here you can adjust some technical settings like resolution. We recommend leaving these alone unless you know what you are doing or have received instructions from support.

A useful option in case of delays or problems is the 'Show FPS counter' option in the Misc menu. When you turn it on, the number of frames per second your computer can generate appears in the lower right corner of the screen (very small). This depends on the complexity of the room, the number of people in the room and the capabilities of your computer. An FPS below 20 usually means that the room is too heavy for your computer. Closing other applications and tabs may help in that case. If necessary, click on the FPS counter to show more statistics.

How to take selfies, photos and videos

Just like in a real room, in imedu you can also take photos and videos. Sometimes you want to take a selfie of your avatar, take a picture of the room, take a short shot of a lesson, or maybe even set up a group photo.

You can use the camera tool for this.

  • Click 'Place' and choose 'Camera'.
  • A camera will appear in the screen with several options
  • You can place the camera anywhere in the room (you don't have to hold it)

  • With the upper button you take a picture, with the lower button you start a video. The 'photo' button is replaced by a 'stop recording' button after starting a video recording.
  • With the arrows left and right you can set the waiting time before the photo or video is taken. Useful if you want to be photographed as well.
  • Press and hold the space bar for options. Here you can turn the microphone on/off, rotate the camera for a selfie, or quickly focus on yourself.
  • After taking a photo or video, it appears in the chat AND in the room. So everyone in the room has access to the photo or video.

Troubleshooting

Because imedu does require a bit more of your computer than a simple website, we always recommend closing or pausing heavy (background) programs. This also applies to Teams, Zoom or other video-meeting programs.
