Communicate & cooperate

Communication is not only important when having a meeting face to face, but also in a virtual meeting. Therefore it is key to understand how communicating works in imedu as well. Although some of the functions work in a similar fashion as other applications such as Zoom or Microsoft teams, there are some differences, especially in the way audio works in imedu. Learn all about it in the article below!

Natural conversation with spatial sound

In imedu, you can just talk to each other in a natural way with your headset. This is because the sound works the same as in real life.

You hear sound from a certain direction (this works especially if you have a headset on), and it becomes softer as you move away from someone. This allows you to confer in groups, at a distance from each other, without all talking at once.

So if you are closer you hear someone better, and if you move further away the (voice) sound becomes softer. How strong this effect is, depends on the settings of the room.

Adjust volume per person

Do you want to hear someone better or less clearly? Move the mouse over the person and use the volume buttons to adjust the sound of that person. Optionally, you can also hide the person completely from you. Then the avatar disappears only for you, the person itself remains in the room.

Chat

Each room has its own group chat. You can open this by clicking on the 'chat' button. Please note that everyone in the room can join in the chat. If your room consists of several rooms, each room will have its own chat.

The teacher can disable the chat in the menu: 'More > Room info & settings > Edit > Allow chatting'.

Webcam streaming

Just as with a video chat or meeting tool, with imedu you can turn on your webcam or share your screen. This then appears 'floating' in the room and is visible to everyone. You can move this screen around and possibly put it on a wall or panel.

  • Click 'Share' and 'Camera' to share your webcam
  • Wait until the screen has loaded
  • Open the 'objects' menu at the top right, select the video object to open the options.
  • Click 'Pin to' and select a frame to place your screen in.

Or move the screen manually.

  • Pick up the screen with your left mouse button to move manually
  • Hold spacebar for additional options.
  • Click the button with the arrows (hold spacebar), and drag with the mouse button pressed to enlarge or reduce the screen.

Share desktop for documents or presentations

Just like your webcam, you can also share your desktop. This works in the same way, only here you choose what to share in advance. You can choose from

  • Share your entire desktop
  • Only a single window/window

Everyone in the room can then watch what you are doing or presenting on your desktop on the appearing screen.

Just like your webcam (and any other object), you can place this screen on one of the frames in the room via Objects > Select object > 'Pin to...'.

Pointing out or clarifying things with the 'pen tool' (pen)

To indicate things or write something on the wall or floor you can use the 'pen' tool. With this tool you can write on walls and floors with a pen, and in different thicknesses and colors.

  • Click 'Share' > 'Pen' to activate the pen tool. Click 'ESC' to put the pen down again.
  • With the pen in your hand, draw or write with your mouse and left mouse button
  • Change colors with SHIFT+Q and SHIFT+E while holding the pen
  • Use SHIFT + the wheel of your mouse to change the thickness of the pen
  • Delete your last (own) lines with CTRL-Z
  • In the 'Objects' menu at the top right, as a teacher you will find a button to delete all drawings (of everyone) in the room.

As a teacher you can determine in your room settings whether others can use the pen as well. To do so, go to 'More' > 'Room info and settings' > 'Edit' > 'Create Drawings'.
